Wow, what a weekend ! Adams soccer team Birkenhead United played in the Nike cup. They were a year younger than the other teams but they are awesome so hoped to give the others a run for their money. The first match on Sat morning was against the favourites - Oratea. It was a hard fought match and we managed to hold them to a 0-0 draw. Winning 2-0 against Hibiscus coast saw us qualify for the semifinals against Albany (another great team).
Well, the match started off badly with Albany scoring the first goal. The boys refused to be intimidated though and Adam score a blinder of a goal (lft foot volley from outside the goal box) to equalise just before half time. The second half was nail biting. Both teams were so determined and were playing their heart out. It could have gone either way. With only a few minutes to go Adam managed to nail it for Birkenhead by putting a beautiful cross from the corner into the back of the net. We had made the final.
We were up against the Oratea team that were favourites and who we had drawn with in the first match. But, by now our boys were on fire. Despite really tough opposition they played some of the best football that we have ever seen them play and won the tournament 3-0. We are so very proud of them all - and Adam was a super star. He even has his own female fan club LOL!!!
Next wekend they play the rest of the North Island teams and if we win they go to Aussie to play in the next round. the winners of this go on to Stanford Bridge in Manchester for the world finals! A long way ahead, but hey, a guy can dream!
